Goodreads Synopsis:

The Shadowhunters of Los Angeles star in the first novel in Cassandra Clare’s newest series, The Dark Artifices, a sequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series. Lady Midnight is a Shadowhunters novel.

It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.

Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…

Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago—has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn’t recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?

Glitz, glamours, and Shadowhunters abound in this heartrending opening to Cassandra Clare’s Dark Artifices series.

  • My thoughts

I finished reading this book last week. Ever since, I haven’t been able to read anything else. I haven’t been able to write anything or to get into any of the tv shows I usually watch. I’ve been consistently stalking Cassandra Clare’s tumblr and reading every single word she writes about Lady Midnight. I cannot stop thinking about this book! I think I’m obsessed.

It’s been years since I read CoHF and I had forgotten how much I love Clare’s writing and this amazing world she has created. In Lady Midnight we get to see how much Cassie has improved as a writer (with each book she gets better and better, and all those plot twists? This lady is a genius!) but we also get little peaks at what happened with our beloved TMI and TID characters. Every time one of them showed up I would squeal and start smiling and giggling like crazy. I’m pretty sure I’ve scared my sister at least twice.

Then we have the ‘new’ characters. The Blackthorns and Emma are not exactly new, we got to meet them in the last TMI book, but The Dark Artifices is a series that focuses on them and it’s been 5 years since we last saw them, so they are fairly different.  I LOVE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM! Emma is such a badass, and quirky and really sarcastic and also so protective towards Jules. Julian IS MY NEW BABY. The whole book I just wanted to hug him and tell him it’s gonna be okay and that he deserved better because THAT BOY IS A LITTLE PIECE OF SUNSHINE. Like, c’mon guys, he’s been through so much and he never complains and he just loves his family so much! He would give (and has given) up everything for his family and he’s also an artist, and morally dubious and I love him for that. Even that last one, yes. It makes him more real and interesting, you know? Then we have the rest of the kids, who I love very much and I could go on and on about each of them, but let’s just say that if anything happened to any of them I would personally kill someone. They are all precious little snowflakes and they deserve all the happiness in the world. Also, Tavvy is a cutie pie and Ty is possibly my new favorite little genius (it’s only the first book and I already ship him with SOMEONE WHO I CAN’T SAY BECAUSE SPOILERS). Anyway, now let’s talk about Mark. Yes, I love him. Like, a lot. He’s also been through so much (do you see a pattern here? Because I do and I am so mad that the Blackthorns, who are all children, had to suffer so much already) and he’s kinda lost but he really loves his family and I JUST CAN’T. I love the way he speaks, and most of the times when I cracked up reading this book it was due to something he said or did. I hope on the next books he’ll be able to find himself again and be happy with WHOMEVER HE CHOOSES ( I ship him with two different people –he’s just that lovable- but I can’t say anything because spoilers).

Besides the Blackthorns and Emma, I also loved Cristina! She’s so loyal, and smart, and kind, and is always there for Emma and Mark and everyone else. She’s the type of friend you always wished you had. She’s absolutely amazing, and reliable, and steady and she deserves the world. I hope to learn more about her past in future books and can’t wait to see how she deals with all that is about to happen.

Perfect Diego was okay, I don’t love him but he’s nice. I don’t want to say anything about Kieran right now because SPOILERS but maybe I will in a future post discussing some theories or something like that.

I feel like I could talk about this book forever. I’m not kidding, I’ll probably still write another post about it. Waiting for book two will be torture, but until then I hope to be able to escape this horrible slump and get distracted with some other amazing books.

If you haven’t read this book yet, what are you waiting for? I know it’s only March, but I can already feel this will be one of my favorite books read this year.

Please feel free to leave a comment if you want to talk about any character, theories or whatever really. If it’s spoilery, don’t forget to state that!

Also, sorry about how long this turned out to be. I tried to make it as small as possible, I really did. But as I mentioned, I’m obsessed with this book and just needed to let out everything (or at least some of it 😉
